School Counselors provide individual counseling to assist students with educational planning, college and career counseling, and personal development. Appointments may be made in the Commu= nity Office by completing a request form. We can also refer to our Applewood Couns= elor in the building to meet with students on a more regular basis for mental he= alth counseling.

Career-Technical Interests

Maple Heights High School and Bedford High School offer career-technical education programs for our students. Some of the two-year programs are Cosmetology, Marketing, Business Tech, Auto Tech, Home Improve= ment, Cisco Networking, Health Science and Media Arts. College-bound juniors are encouraged to take the ACT Assessment during the spring of their junior year. This test is widely used in the state of <= st1:place w:st=3D"on">Ohio for college admiss= ion. The ACT Assessment measures academic skills in English, reading, math, and scie= nce reasoning. The Writing Test, which is optional, measures skill in planning = and writing a short essay. The SAT Reasoning Test (formerly SAT I: Reasoning Test) is used along with a student’s high school record and other information to assess competence for college work. College-bound juniors usually take this test during the spring of the junior year. This test measures critical reading, writing and mathematical reasoning skills. PSAT/NMSQT

Test Date: Wednesday, October 12, 2011. PSAT/NMSQT stands for Preliminary SAT/National Merit Scholarship Qualifying Test. The PSAT/NMSQT is recommend= ed for juniors planning on attending a four-year college program. By taking the PSAT/NMSQT students may practice for the SAT, enter scholarship competition= s, request colleges to send them information, and find out if they have the academic skills needed to succeed in college. The PSAT/NMSQT measures criti= cal reading skills, math problem-solving skills, and writing skills.

Most colleges prefer online applications and so= me colleges will waive the admission fee if you apply online. The application = fee is usually charged to a credit card. Students will need to bring the follow= ing to the School Counseling Office:

Helpful Hints

1.      = APPLY EARLY! The MHHS = Counseling Department recommends that your college applications be completed by Thanksgiving!

2.      = Make the application neat. Type or apply online for a more professional looking application.

3.      = Check to se= e that all information is correct-name, social security number, etc. Proof spellin= g. Make sure you signed the application or it will be returned.

4.      = Give teache= r and counselors 1 week minimum to complete applications/ recommendations. There = will be no guarantee that applications will be submitted to meet deadlines if received with less time.

5.      = Be sure everything is completed and turned in at one time. Missing or incomplete information may delay an acceptance decision.

6.      = Many applic= ations are available in the School Counseling Office located in the Media Center. Applications may also be downloaded from college web sites.

Post Secondary Enrollment Options Program (PSEOP)

Students ha= ve the option of enrolling in courses at the college level. Each participating college/university has established admission criteria and course registrati= on procedures which high school students must follow. Students and parents must inform the high school administration by March 30th, of their intent to participate in PSEOP for the upcoming school year. Students should meet with their counselor for additional information and to determine if the program = is appropriate for them. Costs of the course will default to the student/paren= t if a participating student fails to complete a course. Parents and students are invited to attend “PESOP Information Night” on January 11, 2012= at 6:00 p.m. in the High School Media Center.

Challenge Yourself: Take Advanced Placement (AP) Courses

Participating in the AP Program gives students = the opportunity to take college-level courses while they are still in high scho= ol. Students develop the writing skills, problem-solving techniques, and study habits that will prepare them for college academics. Plus, taking rigorous = AP courses demonstrates a student’s maturity and commitment to academic excellence, which can help them stand out in the college admissions process= .
