Your child will receive a variety of instruction during the year. There will be whole group instruction, small group and independent work. The type of instruction will vary to the needs of the student. Throughout the year, students will be reading from a variety of text. This might be from the textbook, novels or picture books. There will be a variety of activities to accompany the readings. Students need to make sure their self selected reading book, notebook, folder and composition notebook are at school daily. Listed below are a few possible examples of novels that might be read this year.

Grading will occur on a variety of activities. These are class participation, class work, homework, quizzes, test, projects and response journals. Grades will variety on the assignment. An example would be a response journal is worth 5 points while a graphic organizer sheet is worth 10 points. Students will have reading log every night for homework. The student is to read for at least 30 minutes, complete their log sheet and obtain a signature of an adult who witnessed the student reading. The student needs to bring this reading log signed everyday.
