When Milkovich Middle School Teacher Mary Matisak (they/she) was honored with the 2023 Diversity Education & Citizen Leadership Award from The Diversity Center of Northeast Ohio (DCNEO), it emphasized and showcased the impact she has had as an educator for over 10 years. They received the award at the organization’s 69th Annual Humanitarian Award Celebration in November.
The DCNEO has been around in some form since 1927 and strives to “create communities where all people are connected, respected, and valued.” They work with schools and students of varying ages, from elementary level to post-secondary education, across several northeastern Ohio counties.
During their acceptance of the award, Matisak highlighted her dedication to creating an inclusive classroom. “I am committed to anti-racism and unlearning the societal conditioning that causes harm to others,” said Matisak. “I consider myself profoundly blessed to work alongside my exceptional colleagues and students who are making a positive impact on the world. I am forever grateful for this opportunity.”
Matisak has been teaching at Maple Heights City Schools for over eight years and has taught both English-Language Arts and Social Studies. They also created Maple Heights’ first Social-Emotional Learning (SEL) course, which is taken by all Milkovich 6-8 grade level students.
Matisak has a passion for making a difference in the lives of her young students. They established Milkovich’s Pride club to provide “a safe space for queer and trans youth to have fun and work on advocacy projects,” said Matisak. She also started the Unity Club in partnership with the DCNEO to celebrate diversity while fostering a culture of inclusivity among the student population. This collaboration with the DCNEO offers Milkovich students training to cultivate their leadership abilities and helps to develop further a supportive and caring environment where all students can flourish.
